Very often an extrusion needs to be cut down to a specific size. After it is produced, the extrusion is first cut down to manageable sections at the press and then moved to a room where it is carefully placed in que to be cut down further by a far more precise saw. Extrusions that will be cut in this fashion are initially cut at lengths longer than a simple mathematical calculation would indicate - the reason: there is inevitably a small loss of material shaved off per cut, as well as a short length by which the saw may "grip" the extrusion while it is being cut. These details are reliably factored into the initial cut length, yielding an efficient use of overall "raw" extrusion.
