Minalex Saves $10,000 and 5,000 Pounds of Metal by Redesigning Laboratory Device Extrusions

An international manufacturer of laboratory automation equipment approached Minalex for help redesigning an existing equipment platform.

Minalex provides miniature aluminum extrusions to this manufacturer and two of its partner companies. The manufacturer turned to Minalex with the goal of modifying parts to reduce the amount of metal used and increase cost-efficiency without compromising the integrity of the parts.

These parts on the frame are designed to help stabilize the machine. Because this is a medical application, the part must meet strict standards for cleanliness and precision. Aluminum is ideal for medical device applications because it’s lightweight and strong and discourages bacteria growth.

Minalex extruded the new profile shape, which made the part thinner and lighter while retaining the strength required for stabilization. The new part saved 5,000 pounds of metal and produced a cost reduction of $10,000 in metal alone on the company’s next order.

Healthcare, surgical, and medical device manufacturers continue to trust our team of engineers and technicians to produce standard parts and design custom parts from scratch. This recent project shows how Minalex can also improve existing parts, whether your goal is to save money, increase performance, or both.
